IMMIGRATION.
WHY AUSTRALIA LAGS BEHIND
LACK OF ADVERTISING
Almost every day there is to be found someone who comes back to Australia, telling us that the other Dominions are getting one hundred immigrants for every onci that comes out here, says the Sydney Daily Tclegvaph. Commissioner W. J. Richards, of flic Salvation Army, who has just arrived in Australia, and has been appointed Senior Commissioner for the Southern Territory, which includes Victoria, South Australia, .Tasmania, and West Australia, repeats these facts. ; he adds, “the Governments of Australia have only themselves to blame. Canada is thriving, because it lias been so largely advertised. The extensive use of lantern slides and other advertising material has lured thousands of immigrants to Canada, which is not half so productive as this glorious country. , ■ “Publicity would make Australia. There is another thing, too. In Canada more encouragement is given to the new settler than is the ease here. If the Governments of this country established centres where the new arrivals could obtain stock and implements on the instalment scheme, Australia could solve the unemployment problem
