RAINFALL RECORDS

AT GISBORNE. A comparison of the rainfall records for the past three veal's, as supplied by Mr C. P. Duvies, demonstrates thai the past venr of 1921 was the driest period. In 1919. rain fell upon 108 days, the total fall being 30.43 inches, fhe full in 1920 was greater by about (en per coin., but, iii 1921, though rain fell on 133 days, the. total fall was only 28.59 inches.

TK KARAKA. The total rainfall for the month of December, 1921. was 8b points, falling on 13 days, the heaviest fall heing 46 points on December 2. The total fall for 1921 was "24.87 inches, this,.being the lowest since: the first complete record Mas kept in 1914. There were 142 days upon which rain tell during the year. The past llirce years' records, indicate exceptionally dry weather, while for the three years before that, there was a run of unusuullv wet weather. The: totals for the previous seven years were: 1914, 66.61 inches on 136 davs; 1915. 62.05 inches on 136 davs; 1916, 88.38 inches on 168 days; 1917. 103.82 inches on 166 days; 1918, 64.97 inches on 160 davs ; 1919, 58.61 inches on 104 davs : 192 C, 47.61 inches on 137 days. the heaviest individual day's rain recorded was 12.55 inches, which fell mi June 11th, 1917, which month holds the record for any month with 23.6 inches on 13 days. The, driest, month so far recorded was, January. 1914,when only .35 inch fell on 4 days, but November, 1920, and March, 1921, were close tup with .6 inch on 8 days and .62 on. 4 days respectively. Only four months during the past eight vears have, had twenty wet davs or over, these, being Mav, 19i4, 19.22'inches on 22 davs; Mav, 1916, 22.69 inches on 23 dav*: July, 1916, 11.02 inches on 20davs; and March, 1918, 10.91 inches on *22 days. 'The heaviest, shower recorded \rna the 51 points, or .slightly over half an inch, which fell in twenty minutes on the afternoon of April 19th, 1921.
