MAD DOCTOR’S CAREER.
OPERATION ON A CORPSE. lierr Gebherd, a surgeon with a large practice in Schwerin, Mechlenburg, has just been certified insane and lemoycd to a lunatic asylum, after having continued to operate long after his . mind Tiad given" way. The. discovery was made in a . some;-' what dramatic manner. It had recently been noticed that ,a . disproportionate‘ .number: of deaths-had occurred in -.bis nursing home. During an-operation the nurse, who assisted him noticed that the doctor went on operating after the patient, a woman, had died. She drew liis attention to the fact that death had occurred, but Dr. Gebherd calmly went on operating on the corpse, . . - y - After, his removal to the asylum it was discovered that 'quite a number of unusual operations had been performed by ■him at his nursing home. Among them was the case iof a soldier,, whose arm had been unnecessarily amputated, while a woman suffering merely from, inflammation of the-ear had her ear removed. It is not clear whether , the doctor , had concealed, his mental condition so long from his nurses by extraordinary cunning, or whether they had not been sufi fidiently observant to notice, the change .in. his manner.
