BRIDGE WORKS.

GLADSTONE ROAD BRIDGE. In his report to the Borough Council last night,' the engineer “stated :—The preliminary plans for the proposed ferroconcrete f bridge across the Turanganui river at the end of Gladstone road and connection with Wainui road, Haiti, have been, prepared, and are .now sub-. ! mitted for the Council’s approval under seal. I recommend that these, plans be then forwarded to the Harbor Board, and the Marino Department for formal approval in the usual course. The total width of (Jhis bridge between parapets is 40ft., and comprises of a roadway 30ft. wide, carrying tramway tracks in'centre, kind two footpaths of sft. each. The deck level will be about TBhi;- lower than the deck of the present timber structure, thereby allowing "of the grade on the Kaiti sfde being improved from 1 in 20 to-1 in* 60. The: headway for the river traffic will be 16ft. 4iin. above low water ordinary spring tides, or Ift. B|in. more headway than lias been approved of by the Marine Department for The new Peel street” - forro-dbnerete -.bridge. This bridge will have, to be built on a skew -angle of 70 degrees, being the angle the road makes with the liver. The clear opening ,of each span will be 33ft.. 2iii. measured on the square from pier to- pier,’. or 40ft. 9in. measured on the line of bridge. Owing to the skew angle the main gilders are of- longer span and heavier section than the Peek street bridge, but -the 'general design is the same, o The-clear opening or span for river traffic-will be uniform with the Peel steet bridge, namely 38ft. ;2in. • ROEBUCK ROAD BRIDGE. Two of the fender piles of tin's bridge on the downstream side have been broken off when a lighter /was passing through. They are thoroughly riddled .by the sea worm, and, in fact, very little of the timber is left. On the. 4th inst., in company with Mr. liuuter, the engineer for Messrs. Nelson Bros.’ works, and our foreman, and bridge carpenter, l inspected the sub-structure of th.js bridge. The piles between high and low water are -badly infested with the teredo navalis of up to 6 to 8 inches in length, and they are in a verv active state. 1 saw no trace of the limuoria terebrans which is so prevalent in the harbor itself. , Messrs. Nelson Bros, have agreed to undertake the repairs, immediately .necessary to this bridge) with their own workmen, and :it the expense of the Borough'Council. AVe have the .piles required in'stock at' the borough yard: This bridge, with careful watching, may last some few years, but it will eventually have to be replaced with a sub-structure 'proof from k attacks of . the marine ' borers. --
