CROWDS WATCH TROOPS’ i ARRIVAL. . (Received March 9, 2.15 p.m.) i BERLIN, March 8. i A proclamation has been issued, signed bv the burgomaster of Duisburg, . warning, the people against any demonstration. , He called upon women and children to remain indoors when the troops arrived. Dense crowds thronged the approaches to the bridge between Dusseldorf and Obercassel to watch the arrival of the troops. The Dusseldorf authorities evacuated the police barracks in order to provide billets for the Allied troops. —A. and N.Z.C.A. j ALLIED GUNS WITHIN RANGE OF, ESSEN. I FRENCH GUNBOATS ON RHINE. (Received March 9, 2.20 p.m.) j . COLOGNE, March 8. As day broke British and French detachments debouched from Cologne bridgehead and marched or drove in motor lorries along the waterside. They entered Dusseldorf from the east and south. The bulk of the forces consisted of infantry, French and British contributing cavalry and tanks. Significance to the ocupation of. Duisberg and Buhrort is that the Allied gkuis are now within range of Essen. The Belgians have placed batteries in position at Obercassel, on the banks of tlio Rhine, whence Dusseldorf will be under gunfire in ease of resistance. Tw'o French gunboats also have their guns pointed at the city. None of the 12,000 Americans comprising the army of occupation on the Rhine, partook of the advance. Senegalese troops. have been withdrawn arid replaced by six regiments of tirailleurs from Tunis mid Morocco. General Dcgouttc issued a proclamation to the inhabitants, promising workers every facility for continuing to work and ensuring the food supply.—A. and N.Z.C.A. .
