GIRL'S SMILE SAVES £100,000.

.NI^W YORK, July 9.— A girl's smile and iritperturbable- courage as she faced three revolvers levelled .afc her through the glass partition of a vault door foiled soven bandits who raideH a New York bank. The vaults treasure comprised £100,000 m cash besides a large sum represented by bonds. The men descended from a motor-car, entered the institution, which is a branch of the Bank of the Manhattan Company, and covered the officials and employees with revolvers as they ordered them to hold up their hands. Then three of them made for the halfopened barred door of the vaults. Miss Lillian David, the 19-year-old bookkeeper, happened to be inside. Sho closed the door, arid stood calmly contemplating them through the glass partition m rear of the bars. Tlie intruders, as they menaced her with three pistols, shouted to her to let them m, and ono of them, to emphasise the order, fired a shot through the glass over her head. But Miss David stood still and smiled at them. The cashier, Edward Alfchaus, had been counting bank note's, using a glass bowl with a sponge m it to moisten his fingers, as the men entered, and one of them levelled a revolver afc him. For a second the attention of this robber was distracted by the, shooting at the vault. , Althaus grasped the glass bowl and hurled it ir* his face; then, as he staggered back, the cashier dashed out- of. a rear door, where there was a stairway leading to the roof, and raised an alarm.
