FIELD DAY FOR GISBOR.NE. .. WELLINGTON, this day. .The member for Gisborne .almost monopolised question, time. at last might's meeting of the House, when members listened with, much interest, not unmixed the battery he fired at the. Ministerial /benches. He asked the Minister of Education if. he. .will extend .more sympathetic consideration to the req-uest madeW the- Gisborne High bchool Board foi- -further assistance towards the improvement of the school and grounds, as well as an enlarged annual, grant to Mie school for its general expenditure, m order- to bring the school to a proper standard of efficiency and if legislation i s needed before assistance can be given, will he see that it is provided for during the present eessum? There was a long note to the question, detailing the position of affairs, but when" Mr. Speaker raised a point of order, Mr. Lysriar said it could be taken as read. He asked the Minister for Education if he will take into immediate consideration the question of providing improved school conditions m: Gisborne district, as „ the maiii Gisborne school is the only school m town that has proper accommodation. Allowing 12 square feet" to each : pupil, the Gisborne-Manga-pap.l school has for 432 pupils, amd the present roll . ia- 551. The Kaiti-Gisbom'e school is also very .much overcrowded, and ,so,i is Te Hapara-Gis-bornp school.. •- , The Minister of Education was further asked if he will haye the question of adjusting the whole of the salaries of the teaching stiff gone into, and as far as possible .altered so as to start teachers at £200, and to go up to £800, instead of "starting at £130 and £oing up to £525, including a house lllowant-p of £50j and have the necessary legislation. passQtL .this session as it is perfectly plain tliat the salaries . and in-, iucements now 'being offered do not ensourago new teachers to take up the pro-, fession, nor is it retaining tho best of the old teachers. - Another suggestion was that, instead of lCducationi . Board«(, the ' Minister of Education » will set up ma Board to administer all bi*anches, of .ducatioii.Y including 'kindergarten, primary, technical*,* ahd jhigh • schools , the' Board; to /he' elected to give their whole.; iime.'and/.tb be .paid,— Parliamentary Re : porter.
