Many times have correspondents and speakers denounced the growing, practice of giving a cash bonus to secure the tenancy of a house. Even tenants b,avo boon known to profit" materially ont of the necessities of , other , tenants.. A city estivto agent gave a .Dominion rcpresentafciv© an iljustrafcion of this. Tho tenant of a house stated that as his wife had to go away for awhile he would be letting a fellow-employee have the use of the place.' This proposal seemed reasonable, and was approved, but soon the agent heard reports which aroused his suspicious. Inquiry showed that tho original tenant had left 'for good, and hud made a nico little profit out of the man for whom he had professed sympathy. In the first place he had received a bonus of £5. for letting the new tenant m, and thereafter was making' a weekly profit on' the rental. Tho pgent \\vas unable to do anything about the bonus, but ho took.immediate steps to stop tho profit on the rent. Ho also reported tho matter to tho Labor, Department and to the police,, and' was astonished to find that neither could tako against the original tenant, whpso little bit of pro^ fiteering seemed to be. quite .within the four corners of the law.
