Clapp, at present vicepresident of the St. Louis Railway Company, Ohio, U.S.A., to the position of Chief Commissioner of the Victorian Railways, at a salary of £5000 a year, the appointment being for five years. The present chief commissioner will shortly retire. Applications were invited m Australia and abroad, over 100 being received from Britain and the United States. Mr Clapp was born m Melbourne, and is 44 years of age. He was for five years on the engineering staff of the Brisbane tramways, and then went to America. For several years he was on the staff of the General Bleotrical Company, and subsequently employed as an eleotrical engineer by two railway companies.
