COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Cook County Council was held this afternoon, there being present: Crs. Chas. Matthews (chairman), H. White, F. S. Bowen, G. Witters, and D. J. Parker. Prior to proceeding with the business of the meeting the chairman referred to the death of Mr. J. Townley, and he moved that a letter of sympathy be forwarded to the bereaved famiiy. — Carried. D. Menzies requested permission* to erect a motor shed on the corner of Kells road and the Wharekopae road. — Granted. A cheque for £100 was forwarded by Mr H. Carleton Williams, bjsing £ for £ contribution towards metalling the Sherwood road. — Received. The Health Inspector asked the Council to look into,the matter of a nuisance existing m the upper reaches of the Taruheru river. — Ihe chairman stated that Inspector Ferris had been looking into the matter, and the nuisance was being abated. The Gisborne Citizens' Defence Committee wrote notifying the Council of the expiry of the term of its representatives on the committee, and asking for the election of representatives for the ensuing term. — Present members reelected — Messrs. Reynolds, Broadhurst, Berry, and G. Stock. The Gisborne Borough Council wrote intimating that the Council's letter re contribution to the cemetery bridge had been received.— Cr. White said the borough apparently did not want to spend a penny. — Or. Witters said it was a downright shame that the local bodies could not agree m this matter, causing much inconvenience to people who had Elots m both cemeteries. Figures had een produced showing that the bulk of the plots were held by borough residents andi. the borough had then agreed to "maintain on a basis of two-thirds and onb-third. The construction should be borne on the same basis. — Discussion held over. A letter was received from the Hawke's Bay Education Board, relating to the education of children m sparsely settled districts, asking for any information on the subject the Council could render. — To be supplied. ' The Hon. W. D. 6. Mac Donald forwarded a letter from the New Zealand I Railway Department, m, reply to the Council's letter urging the safeguarding of level-crossings. The reply outlined the present system of safeguards, and the policy with regard to future improvements.— Mr. Mac Donald to be thanked for his efforts m the matter. •
