L, Fraser ' "reported as follows at the meeting of the •' Gook County Council to-day:— Contract 661a, metalling Hangaroa Road: The i contractor has made good progress with this work, having carted out about 1300 1 cubic yards of metal, but owing to wet weather I have discontinued this work until hext season; Contract 668, forma- 1 tidii Hangar o.ti-Tihirotor Road (first mile) • I Completed-^ There are how two miles of ' formation on this road finished, and I baVe let a further 1$ miles on the Hangaroa end, at a satisfadtory price Contract 677 and 677a,. collecting and delivering creek boulders Kopua Hill: Both : these contracts are completed. Contract 678, metalling Ngakaj-oa Road: Satisfactorily completed, and' teams are now en ! gaged repairing the portion from main road to Graham's, about 150 yards having been delivered to date. Contract 682 j formation Bushy Knoll Road .- Satisf ac- ' torily completed. The same contractors i have completed a further nine chains of the same road, also road leading to river ' on both sides ; that latter work being arranged for by Mr Keane. Contract 683 metalling Te Reinga-Tiniroto Road: About 600 yards of spawls and shingle have been delivered on this contract, and no further work will be undertaken until the spring. Contract 685, metal repairs Kahanri and Waerenga-a-hika .- Completed. .Contract 3, Additional formation and metalling Knight's JRoad, Patutahi : Satisfactorily .completed. Cohtract 5, carting metal to depots, Waimarie: Proceeding. Contract 7, metal repairs Wainui Road: This contract will be completed m about a fortnight. Contract 8, metalling Cameron's Road, Mangapapa.- This cbtt* tract was completed early In the month and the contractor is now engaged repairing old metalled portion which was badly cut up; Contract 9, erection of cottages East Qoast Road: The first cottage is completed,, and timber is on the site for the second olie. Contract 10 metal repairs ; Ormohd : Satisfactorily completed. Cohtract 11, crushing and carting metal Kopua- Wharerata : About 530 cubic yards, of metal have been delivered, and the jcontract will be held over until next season. Contract 12, carting metal Muriwai-Kopua Road: Twenty chains of this road has been metalled, and about 1000 yards have already been broken m readiness for carliiin* next-seas-on. Contract 13, metalling East Coast ' Road, Pakarae: This work is well under way, about 250 yards of stone has be«*n delivered and spread and should tho weather continue fine, the contractor will probably "• do ■ a further section of thiswork'before the Winter sets m. Contract 14, metalling Kairoro Saleyards Road.*" Contract completed, about 300 yards of gravel having been delivered. Contract 16, metalling Totahgi Road, about eight chains completed, the road being too wet to do any further metalling this season Contract 17, metalling School Road, Makauri : Practically- completed. The bridge hands have been engaged on repairs to bridges Wainui Road, erecting roadman's whare at Waimata, additions to lorry shed at Matawhero, renewing fences at approaches to Matawhero bridgo and Fencing frontage Taruheru cemetery. The road roller has been Working on the Makaraka Road and is now scarifying and rolling a section at Manutuke; when this is completed I am having the section near the Matawhero saleyards scarified. The motor lorries have • been at work on Sentle Allie Hill, Williams' Road, Muriivai, and repairs Whataupoko-Ormohd, Wairoa and Patutahi Roads. Scoop lands have been engaged claying sandy portions main East Coast Road, Turehau, formation Panikau Road, cleaning up Repongaere Koad, forming ' McDonald's Road, Puninga, and a portion of Nolan's Ltoad, Wainui, Since last meeting I ,have inspected the Whole of the roads m the ;ounty, and found the*m (with a few ex- ; m very fair order. Teams havo been engaged cartitig gravel for repairs on ihe Waorenga-a-hika-Ormond Road. I fiave also engaged BrOcklebank's lorry to repair the Arai Valley Road with Patutahi metal and screenings, I would like luthority to have the Matawhero bridge painted, as it is showing bad signs of rusting, this work Will cost about £140. [ would also like' authority to order 15,000 to 20,000 feet of totara timber for culverts and breastworks. I might mention that totara is iyery hard to procure at present, but Messrs Cave jbros. arc landing a fair quantity m a few weeks' time 'and have offered to give the Council ihe pick of the shipment. The deviation Find metalling at approach to Waingake bridge is now complete. There are several small bridges m the county that want renewing, but I am unable to proceed with the work on account of the. shortage of cement. The. Kaiti drainage scheme, which is being carried out by day labor, is practically completed. , This does not .i include the large concrete drain through ' Mr Cuthbert's property, deLautour Road; this latter contract has not been started" and will probably have to stand over for Borne months until regular supplies of cement are available. Tlie Tublic Works ; Department have written asking this Council to forward a list of Government grants required for next year before the 15th inst., but as the letter was not received until the 3rd of the month, and most of the councillors were' away at the time, I have been unable to comply with their request. This matter will come before you to-day. In' connection with the above, the Public Works Department ask that the estimates be prepared for the March meeting, and thus enable the Government to have a list of Government grants required, sent them early hi April. I have prepared a rough copy of the estimates for 'the year ending 31st March, 1921, and beg to submit same for your consideration:
