Considerable interest is being manifested amongst local boxing enthusiasts iu the coming contest between Les Gleeson and Jack Heeney, which is to take place next month. Cleeson, who arrived by steamer a few days ago, is training steadily at the Gisborne Boxing Association's rooms, where he is giving a free exhibition, in sparring and physical work each afternoon at 3 o'clock. The visitor is an ex- welter weight champion of Australia, and it is claimed for him that he holds the world's record in knocking a man but in one round at Baker's stadium, Sydney. Misty and unfavorable weather conditions mitigated against the success of the Poverty Bay Homing Pigeon Society's race from Cape Kidnappers last week. The birds were liberated by Captain Carlson, of the Ripple, at 9.40 a.m., but owing to the. adverse conditions, they made the land and did- not home. One bird belonging to' Mr. Hudson, however, followed, the' Ripple south all day, and at nightfall settled on the boat, when tit Was caught, and has since been returned to Gisborne. Another race is being 'conducted from Wharerata to-day for maidens. Owing to the weather conditions it has been deemed advisable to discontinue further flying until the end of the winter, but in the event of a spell of fine weather it is hoped to get off a race from Napier.
