THE WANGANUI SENSATION.

~«i — > (Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCHUKCH, this day. Mr Charles Evan Mackay, Mayor of Wanganui, who is m custody on a charge of attempted murder, is well-known m Christchurch. He is a comparatively young man, although he has taken an active part m public life m Wanganui for some years. For some time paßt he has been president of the Wanganui Trotting Club, and he also holds a seat on the executive of the New Zealand Trotting Conference. Mr Mackay is a Wellington and- Wanganui College old boy, and son of a former principal at Wellington College. He came to Canterbury College m 1892 and graduated m 1896. He is well-known m Christchurch, and it is stated that his wife was m Christchurch when the episode m Wanganui occurred. I Mr Darcy Cresswell is a Christchurch man. His age has been given as twentyfour, but he is probably older. Before I going to the war he" was following the profession of an architect, and he is also a clever black and white artist. His father, Mr W. J. Cresswell, who is now farming at Timaru, was until recently a member of a legal firm m Chr^tchurch. He left for the North with Mrs Crespwell on receipt of the news of his son's injury.
