SHIPPING DEADLOCK.
NORTHERN COMPANY'S STEAMERS HELP t?P. . (Per Pre»«s Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. Twelve of the Nort&em Company's steamers are held up in port to-day, owing. to the deadlock in. regard to the question of holding an early conference to discuss a new agreement between the owners and the Merchant "'.Service Guiiid. The old agreement expired on October iJ2, and the owners informed the Guild that a conference could not "take. -place untiil aftei*' Cftristmas-.-^JTbe. date -was subsequent,]^ altered to "December 15. The Guild then demanded a. conference by-next Friday, and after further negotiation the Northern Company offered to meet the Guild on; December 9. The members of the Guild are con.Tderinig the situation, and meanwhile the vessels are held up. A consignment of fifty tons of sugar, which was [intended for despatch to New'' Plymouth from Ofiehunga by the steamer Rimu to-day, was not placed on board, the watersiders refusing- to handle it. On account of this fact it is stated there is a shortage of sugar in New Plymouth, with the result that in some cases it was impossible 'to obtain siTpplies during the week-end.
