FIVE SHDLLING NOTES.
ISSUE .PRACTICALLY CERTAIN
MELBOURNE, Nov. 17.— 1t is now practically certain, owing to the continued increase m- the price of silver, that five shilling bank notes will be put into circulation almost immediately by the Commonwealth Treasury. It may be found possible to mint new coins at a profit by reducing the silver percentage. Experiments to this end are now being conducted. The present silver percentage m all silver coins is high. To reduce the percentage to a level that will make the issue of coinage feasible, and at the same time provide a genuine and durable coin, difficult of imitation by forgers, is the task which the mint officials are endeavoring to solve.
