H. Ormond, as convenor, open 'ed the proceedings by explaining thi object of the meeting, and m humorou: terms indicated) the' "grave" situatior wliich had arisen by the "enemy forces,' which were "stealing a march on th< "Grenadiers." ' Details of the schem< were outlined by Mr W. Lints, organiser, and several letters were receivec from sympathisers, apologising for nonattendance, but assuring -the meeting oi their co-operation m the interests of tht pity Band. An invitation was also received from Mr Rowley inviting the organiser and "War- Secretary " to visit the school and interest the pupils m the organisation. ''' (Contributed.) 1 Hostilities m connection with the pending "Band Battle" opened m dead earnest last evening, when a "severe los^" was inflicted oil , the, Kaiti '^Guards" by the newly constituted ''Grenadier Regiment." Intelligence was' received at last night's mobilisation meeting of the Grenadiers that the Guards had encroached on their territbry by the planting of a "pill box" (btherwise a , recruiting depot m the shape of a railway ticket -siding box), at the foot of Gladstone road, near the Kaiti bridge. A platoon of Grenadiers was detailed to capture the "strong pbint," and after elaborate preparations and amidst no little excitement and amusement the "pill box" was captured, carted off by a special conveyance, and safely "planted." This incident is reported to have occasioned considerable surprise to the "enemy," and . as a counterblast to the surprise sprung on them the "Guards" this morning decided to instruct the ."regimental solicitor". t6 institute ' "legal proceedings" against "Messrs IT. Armstrong apd W. Samson as chairman' 'and secretary of the "prenadies' Arniy. " The Grenadiers, however, ai;e demanding compensation. The fight promised to excite considerable ipcal interest. Yesterday afternoon a^Grertadier patrol "bailed up- and shot"? a^ prominent business - man against the his "own shop for deserting to the ' 'Guards, ' ' and two' "other citizens are -threatened, with a similar '>fate," viz.,. 'to be "publicly shot" m Gladstone, rpad m Two" weeks' time for "desertion to the enemy." Other exciting "stunts" are anticipated m the near future, promising to occasion no little amusement. \ Reside^ of Whataupoko, to be known as "The Flying Corps" m the Great* Band Battle, are notified by advertisement m this issue, to attend a meeting hi the Abercom Hall, Ormond road, this evening' at 8 o'clock to hear the scheme outlined by the executive and to take steps to "do their bit" for the. -worthy cause. From all accounts i\}e battle is", going to provide endless merriment besides raising funds for the purpose oorf r placing the City Band m a Satisfactory position from now on. A. large and representative gathering is assured 'for this evening's meeting.
