GISBORNE SHEEPFARMERS' FROZEN MEAT AND MERCANTILE CO.
An important announcement , respecting the Gisborne Sheepfarmers' Frozen, meat and Mercantile Co. waß contained m the shape' of "a circular, m our last issue. .The company has . taken over the established business <5f Messrs. Bennett and Sherratt, and the amalgamated business will be managed by a mercantile board, separate from and independent of the ' management of the freezing business of the company. The mercantile board as constituted of Messrs. G. M. Reynolds (chairman), F. Hall; H. Williams, H. B. Williams, W. G. Sherratt, D. J. Barry, and W. F. Cederwall (general manager of" the company). Mr. J. Trevor Thomas, who has been, appointed manager Of the mercantile business, has -had valuable experience with other mercantile firms; In accordance with the companyls principles, the mercantile business will be managed as far as possible on co-operative lines. The board particularly emphasises the advantages accruing to farmei's entrusting their wool to its management, offering, they claim, the finest accommodation for exhibition and handling- of wool •m the district. As a result "of co-operation m | the past, it is announced that the direciorß of- this successful company have divided among shareholders m the Freezing Company up to January 31 last*. no less than £118,000, the total subscribed capital on August 31 last haying been only £70,686." Special attention is directed to the issue of mercantile shares, 25,000 of which have beeni setaside to enable those who deal with the firm to acquire an interest m the.declared profits of the mercantile business. The object of : the management, will be to supply every requisite that a farmer or householder can require, and to supply every. agency for the handling,.'protection and marketing of the products of the district. It is interesting to note that a household qualification for householders not engaged m business as owners and for employees of the company is permitted, being- not less than ten mercantile' shares. Mr. A. P. Whatman, who recently j purchased a site for a jjesidence'for him- . self on the tipper Plain, just over the railway line (says the Wairarapa Daily .Times), has once again demonstrated his' generosity by offering to the Government ten sections upon which to erect homes for returned soldiers. The sections have frontages to the Upper Plain road, and each comprises an area of | about a quarter-acre. Mr. Whatman's [only- stipulation is that a fairly good class of housfl flhflll he preisted on. the sections.
