THE TE KARAKA HARD CASE.

(To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir. — Allow us to contradict some reports that are being spread abroad, m Te Karaka and Gisborno to the serious detriment of our efforts on behalf of' the above case. 1. That the trustees have purchased 15 acres of land m T& Karaka at £100 per acre for the distressed people. — There is not a word of truth m this absurd statement, which was made m a shop m To Karaka. 2. That the Salvation Army is paying 30s per week to the family. — Commandant Dawkins informs me that this is not the case. All the help they have received from the Salvation Army, bo! far, is a sniall sum given some time t»o, before we started to collect. 3. That the r woman goes very frequently to" \ fiisb'orne first class.— This is not the case. We can prove that they very BoToom go to" Gisborne, and when they do they .go, second class. 4. That they went to Gisborne m a hired car, and brought back a lot of fruit, — They went up with another lady vho paid for the car. and the fruit. Our informant was the lady m question. 5. That the girl, 13 years of age, recently bought at a certain shop m Te Karaka 5s worth of sweets ;and 5s if soft drinks. — This is entirely denied '>y tho proprietor of the shop; neither ecently, nor at any other time, have L hey spent anything, like 10s m his shop, at any one time; nor have they bought anything of the above nature at my other shop m Te Karaka. These entirely, untrue reports can >nly have for their object the frustration of our efforts on behalf of these poor people./ The people who originate these false reports are known to us, and w e trust that it may not become necessary for us to take other steps to stop any more rumors getting about. All the food these people receive from the trustees is being ordered and paid for by the trustees. — Yours, etc., JR.- M. HUTCHINSON, G. D. WILSON, Trustees.
