EDUCATION BOARD.

At the annual meeting of the Education Board at Gisborne yesterday afternoon, Mr. G. Wildish took the . opportunity as Mayor to express pleasure at, the ' Board's initial visit to Gisborne, which he said would make the Board conversant with the conditions of the Gisborne school. He . congratulated Mr. Burnard upon bringing the matter forward, ■ and the result of the visit, he said, would remove complaints from the local committees that they were not getting a fair go. He trusted that the Board would make regular visits. The chairman, Mr. Roach, thanked the Mayor, and said the visit had been much enjoyed. Proceeding, he referred to the great interest displayed by local committees m school matters, and some of which were an example to other schools. Referring to the visit to the local schools, he said the Board had been impressed with the progress made and the necessity for further additions and infant schools. He regretted that they had been unable to visit all the local schools, but trusted they would be able to do so, visiting the country schools at a later date. He thanked the Gisborne people for the very generous welcome that had been extended to them. Mr. W. Oates urged the necessity for better educational improvements for the backblocks, stressing the importance also of a larger educational vote. Mr. Oates urged that it was essential that a larger vote should be* provided for education, and declared that steps should be taken to see at the forthcoming Parliamentary election that candidates were pledged to this course. Mr. McKay, as one of the visiting members, expressed surprise at the excellent conditions of Gisborne schools, declaring there were some fine enthusiasts here, as nowhere m Hawke's Bay, m the centres, were the schools m such fine order. The question of providing playing grounds had been overlooked m the past, and would have to be considered. Their programme had been a very full and pleasurable one. and he thanked the Gisborne members for their kindly welcome. Mr. .Talbot appeared m support of a school at Kaitangata station, speaking on behalf of cix settlers and 77 school children. He explained that they were five miles from the nearest school (Kanakanaia), -which was separated by a hill road, subject to sl'ps. They were, willing £0 provide a building for the school, which the owner, Mr. Witters, was prepared to make available.— The chairman said the request seemed to be a reasonable one, and the matter would receive consideration. Mr. P. J. Rowley said he had been sent there by the Teachers' Institute to ask the Board to reconsider its decision not to refund expenses incurred at the science classes. The classes, he pointed out, were intended for the benefit of the children, and consquently were an advantage to the Board. It might\ be said that the classes would benefit the teacher's chances 6f promotion, but this, he contended, was negligible. The teachers had relied upon the Board m the matter, and felt they had done their share and should, meet them with the rest of the expenses. Mr. Plank said that m the event of the Board not having the funds they trusted they would have the support of the Board m making an application to the Department. One of the teachers had had to provide a temporary teacher m his absence. — The chairman said that they had only received J8250 out of £490 applied for.
