DEFENCE COMMITTEE

The Citizens' Defence Committee met yesterday afternoon. Present : Messrs. W. G. Sherratb (chairman), H. D<j Costa,' G. Stock, A. H. Wallis, F. E. Gaddaim, H. White, A. H. Lang©, Fletcher. W. He?, R. M. Birrell, G. C. Miiniis, D. W. Coleman, J. W. Bright, H. Miller, and 0. A. Fenwick. A letter was received 1 from the Returned Soldiers' Association, approving of the movement of imparting instruction m basket making- to the soldier inmates of the Cook Hospital. — On the motion of the chairman, it was decided! ito continue the scheme. A letter was freoeived from the Professional Classes War Relief Association, soliciting financial assistance. — Received. A letter was received from Mr. S. Kirkaldie m connection with the TJrentham Dominion Art Union Fund. — Further particulars tc- be asked- for. The financial statement disclosed the following receipts during 1 the month: — Defence Department refund, £5; Mr. J. H. Murphy, £6; proceeds football matches for Te Araroa Wounded Soldiers' Fund, £12 15s; warrant refunds. £6; refnnds, £26 8s; Mr. J. Townley (monthly), general f un< j., £2: anonymous, Red Cross Fund\ £100; V.M.C.A. Fund. £100; refunds, £15; total, £271 3s. The expenditure for the same period amounted to £479 19s 4d. Messrs. Wauchop and feirrell were appointed to meet steamers . during the ensuing 1 period, and Messrs. Kenway j and Wallis were appointed to <yjsit the ' hospital. . j Mr. R. M. Birrell submitted, a, report of the Advisory Board's conference as already publshed. j Mr Marchbanks saw some of the concrete ships under construction at >San Francisco. TVo concrete ships of 7500 tons each were being built there to the order of the United States Government. Mr Bruce Lloyd, an old New Zealander, was m charge of the work. The ships were te be used as oil carriers, and were divided by longitudinal and cross bulkheads m many Compartments, with the object of making them practically '• nnsinkable. The success of these ships remains to be proved. /Mr Marchbanks' noticed that the protection for the steel outside was very small. The ships apparently had been designed by the authorities m Washington m competition with wooden ships, and. the amount <>f concrete had been reduced to a minimum. At the time of his visit no, concrete had been poured, but the work of placing the reinforcement was well ad-, vanced.
