A public meeting is to be held at Mangapnpa on Monday night to consider a petition m regard to the merging of Mangapapa into the Borough of Gisborne. "My firm lost about £10,000 as a result ol the closing of all theatres during the epidemic last year," was the statement made by Mr. Walter Ftdler to the Bylaws Committee of tliie Auckland Oit3 r Council. Loans totalling £2000 were disposed of at a meeting of the Co-operative Building Society last evening, as follows : £500 No. 2 sold at £6 per £100, £500 No. 3 sold at £26 per £100. The first ballot m No. 4 drawn by A. M. Irons (£500) and H. W. Hall (£500). At St. Andrew's Presbyterian Sunday school hall on Thursday night next the distribution of prizes and certificates will take place. A short programme will precede the prize-giving. The parents and friends are cordially invited to be present. There will be a collection towards the expenses. As this is the first function of the kind for some time a large and sympathetic attendance is requested. The Poverty Bay Cricket Association's proposal to provide a suitable sports ground for the district, provided with adequate facilities for out-door sports, was considered at a meeting of the Returned Soldiers' Association last evening, when a communication was received from Mr J. N. Bullard on the subject. Tha following resolution was adopted : "That the (iisborne Returned Soldiers' Association heartily approves of the proposal to form a sports ground suitable for Gisborne, and will do all m its power to assist the executive m carrying the proposal into eiffect. Regarding a memorial to our fallen comrades, we consider that any such memorial should apply to all classes of the community and be placed m a truly public place. A military funeral took place at Taruheru cemetery yesterday afternoon, when the remains of the late Private Miles I F. Hudson (22/986), who died at the ; Gisborne hospital on Saturday night, . were interred with military honors. Deceased was a member of the 13th Reinforcements, being attached to the 2nd Otago Regiment. He saw Bervice m France, andi .received a gunshot wound m the hip on October, 1916. He was m hospital at Walton-on-Thames, and returned to New Zealand m March, 1917. Deceased was admitted to the Gisborne hospital on January Bth last. He was 27 years of age, his next of kin being Mrs. Higham, 79 Crawford road (mother). Deceased was a quiet lad, highly spoken of by his comrades. The firing party was provided by members of the Returned Soldiers' Association.
