SELF-DENTAL APPEAL.
A successful sale of. work was held m the Masonic haJl last night, .m aid of the kalvatton Army self-denial appeal. The band rendered a short, programme, and Commandant Holmes then referred- to the object of the sale, and said' it was really semi-patriotic* They could justly have mado several appeals. in this town for tho various branches of war- work. Ho specially mentioned fclio • ambulancework, 1-e.ief among the Belgian and French wax orphans, and also 70 (war orphans m. this country. He said tliat the Serbian. Government had asked the Salvation Army to- take over relief work m Serbia. He thanked the Victoria League for sympathy and services m connection with, the movement; also the Army sisters for their labors of 'love, lie expressed regret that tlw> Mayoress was unable to be present, and thanked the Mayor for coining m her stead. His Worship was given an enthusiastic welcome, mud spoke m eulogistic terms of the Salvation Army. He said they were doing, a great work- before the war, but it had increased tenfold now. He hoped the appeal Mould be a great success, and formally declared the sale open^ The various stalls all reflected' credit on t'ho- faorkeis and organisers. The local imliastries stall had a fine display o? pickle:?, preserves, cordials, etc., made by Mr l)ow<lle. The sweets , stall also was supplied by him, and did good busi- 1 ness. The work,, fancy, and mixed* stalls did very well. Some woodwork by Mr Ilolloway, senr., also attracted attention."
The following had . charge of the stalls: Ice-cream and soft drinks, Misses iSutc'iiti'e and J^olson; local industries, Mrs H. Thompson; drapery, Mesdam*s Dowdlc, Holdeh, and Ourtis; niised stall, Mesd'ames Fred. Stevenson and If arris ; fancy stall , Mrs Commandant Holmes and) Mrs Ensign Glover ; youiig people's stall, Misses Colema'n and Nellie Thompson; sweets. Misses -Wijidnsh ajn,d Watts ; refreshments, Mesdaanes Yardl«y, Sutclilfe, and Radcliife.
Tho proceeds last evening 1 totalled £60. The sale will be - continued to-night, when a programme by sympathisers and friends will be given.
