Renter's correspondent at French Headquarters, writing on September 15, states; On the plateau east of Laffanx i "I General Mangin attacked this morni 'n the direction of Angeprardien, on tl. ■ Soissons-Maubeuge road and at Ciolombe' farm, near Jouy. We advanced one kilometre on a front of four kilometres, capturing several positions m the valley separating San or from the Plateau Jouv.
Despite mnehine-jruns and artillery sweeping 1 the ]>\iteriu, and vigorous counter-attacks." the French maintained themselves m the captured positions. The chief feature of the day's fighting was the capture of numerous subterranean passages, dug under the plateau, wherein the Germans put up a desperate and furious resistance and lost most heavily.
