SHOCKING SCENES AT PETRO-

A correspondent of a Stockholm newspaper likens the bloodthirsty Soviets* ruthlessness to rabies. There is a daily spectacle of numerous corpses floating on the Neva or washed towards Kronstadt and swept ashore. Another ghastly sight was six . priests roped together and flung into the river. Tho tide later threw the bodies up-ou the beach. Tumbrils are heard rolling all night m the Pctrograd streets, laden with corpses from the prison courtyards. Priests and officers ate the chief victims ; ' the others are principally the hated bourgeoise, shot on the least suspicion of anti-Bolshevik tendencies.

Over one hundred engineers and foremen at the Putiloff works were murdered because they , displeased the manager. Assassination became the regulai policy when an executive was. appointed by Lenin, Trotsky, and Sinovieff to protect tottering Bolshevism, assisted by Uritsky, Minister of the Interior, who is nicknamed the Bolshevik Marat.

The result of a proclamation demanding the shooting of everyone convicted of anti-Bolshevist sentiments was that Red Guards and rabble carried out the orders with savage alertness. A young student named Ranneyeishez acted; a? Uritsky's Charlotte Corday. Fifty-two victims were firstly listed, and the list of condemned was afterwards so numerous that no further lists were pub„ lished.

Murders, and the imprisoning of hostages, greatly increased after Uritsky's death. Thus a situation of extremetension and peril was created. Revolt may break out at any moment, which even the Soviets dread. The city is paraded by artillery m all directions. Macbine-guns are posted at every corner. Highly-paid Red Guards' and Chinese serve as bodyguards, and surround every Commissioner's residence and office. ■ ■ ■
