SNOWFALL IN THE SOUTH.

HEAVY LOSSES OF STOCK

REPORTED

(Per Press Association). (Delayed by line interruptions.)

CHRISTCHURCH, last night. Following a steady rain all morning, 9, heavy fall of snow commenced at 2 o'clock on July 2nd. The weather shows a slight sign of improvement, though rain was falling again this morning. Telegraph gangs were out, but have not ascertained the damage yet, and no information is available as to when the lines will be restored.

The Railway Department reports interruptions to traffic. The train from Springfield has not got through, and the train, leaving this morning for the West Coast only got to Darfield. It was- hoped the Methven train would reach the city this afternoon, but no trains are running on the Mount Somers and Cheviot lines. The Lake Coleridge electric current is again cut off, both lines- t>eing down, and gangs have not located the breaks. The city therefore is dependent again on the Tramway Board for electric supply. Mr. Skinner, Commissioner of .Crown Lands, has received information as regards the weather from various parts of Canterbury. The position m the back country is serious, especially as snow, is still falling. Indications point to heavy losses of stock m some parts. The rainfall at Christchurch for the twenty-four hours to 9 o'clock this morning was nearly an inch and threequarters. Reports from North Canterbury state that the fall of snow was very heavy m that district. The telegraph lines are down m some part.?, and railway traffic north of Rangicjra has been interfered with.
