FIRST BRITISH ELECTRIC SHIP
The first electrically propelled merchant ship ever built m England, and the largest electric vessel m the world, is now undergoing her finishing touches m a yard on the north-east coast, and will shortly start on her first voyage. This vessel is designed on what is known as the Ljurgstrom turbo-electric system, m which a combination of steam and electricity is employed, steam turbines drivinec the electro motors which actually propel the ship. The entire mechanism is ■n-erned by a small wheel, the size and shaipe of a motor-oar steering handle, while an electric steering gear causes the vessel to answer to her helm as readily as a bicyclf. The importance of this type of vessel under present conditions is to be found m decreased coal consumption and larger cargo space.
