BOMBING AND FIGHTING.

BRITISH AIRMEN'S SUCCESS. BATTLES IN THE AIR. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association) ;Reuter's Telegram.) LONDON, May 17. Sir Douglas Haig, m his aviation report, says that aefroplanes and balloons carried out a great deal of work on Wednesday m co-operation wjith the artillery. Bombing machines began an attack at dawn, which continued until dark. They dropped over 24 tons of bombs on their targets, including the railway stations at Tqurnai, Courtrai, and Chaulnes; billets m the neighborhood of Douai, Bapaume, Menin. and the Somme; also Zeebrugge and Bruges Canal. The enemy aircraft was active early m the morning and also m the evening, attacking our bombers with particular insistence. We brought down 25 German machines and drove down 12. We shot down one. Eleven British machines are missing. After dark our night-fliers continued, and dropped over fourteen tons of bombs on railway stations at Chaulnes, Lille, and Douai, on billets at Peronne, Bray, and Bapaume, and on the docks at Bruges. One* British machine has not returned. Early on Tuesday aeroplanes set out .to bomb the factories and railway stations at Saarbrucken. Crossing the lines' they encountered ten scouts. A running fight ensued alomy the whole way to tho objectives. When Saarbrucken | was reached they attacked the British with the utmost vigor. Despite the attacks. _we dropped 24 heavy bombs on objectives. Several bursts were Been on the railway and a fire started. Having attained our objectives our aeroplanes concentrated* their efforts m a fi^M against the enemy's machines. We brought down five. One British aeroplane was seen to be shot down. All I the others have returned. ,
