The Laborers' Union has a notice m this issue requesting employers who have iv, their employ laborers who are not members of the union, to notify the secretary (Mr D. W. Coleman), m accordance with the preference %lause m the award. The executive wish; to state that unless this clause is better, observed information will have to be laid.

Then the member reverted to his Ministerial part for, the memorable men of Anzac. l3ut suddenly, the Minister had to become the member again. A pel son m the crowd absurdly interrupted the speaker during a passage whicii should have- hushed the hardest-hearted heckler. "You always speak out of your turn, flEck, 1 " said Mr. Wilford. "Mick," unprepared for this disconcerting reply, • lapsed into ' a respectful silence. It does not always do to become enchanted by a name. A local resident, a keen amateur gardener, was delighted . with the Baroness Orczy's novel, "The 'Scarlet Pimpernel." He wondered what ! the plant which gave so alluring a title !to a book might be. Failing to obtain : the seed locally, the gardener looked up ! his English catalogue and found the §earlet jPimpernel listed therein. The seed arrived. It was sown, with care, ' the baby seedlings were pricked- out and finally a border was made up of the j dainty little plants. J The Gisborne Tent of the Independent ' Order of Rechabites purpose unveiling an honors board m the Masonic Hall on I Friday evening, May 3rd, m memory of those of their members who have given their services for King and country m the present war. The board is a splendid piece of work, and made locally , i and considered to be second to , none m. the district. The district secretary (Bro. T. Fathers), from Wellington, arrives to-morrow to take part m the ceremony. The parents and wives of Rechabite members at the front: are specially invitad to attend. A social evening will follow the unveiling. A social for the juveniles will be held on Saturday evening. :■' ■ ' I Now that the whereabouts of the passengers and crew of the steamer Matunga have been cleared up, interest I attaches to the crews of other vessels which were captured and sunk by the German raider Wolf. Information of the crews of two /sailing vessels reached Sydney] last week. Messrs' Horwood and Co, shipping agents,' Sydney, were <ad- , vised that Captain Trudgett, of the Jschoonar Winslow, and his officers and ! crew, are prisoners of war m Karlsruhe Camp, Germany. The schooner Winsjlow left Sydney for Apia, Samoa, and I was captured and sunk by the raider, j Captain Trudgett and his crew being . taken on to Germany. A better fate (befell Captain Cameron, and the officers ; and crew of the barque Beluga. She (was also captured and , sunk by the Wolf, but the captain and 1 his men were transferred to the steamer Igotz Mendi (also a capture), which was afterwards wrecked on the Skaw. Captain Cameron and those with him made their way to Copenhagen, from which town he communicated with Messrs Horwood * and Cor informants. When captured by the Wolf the Beluga- was en route from San Francisco to Sydney with a cargo of case oil.
A meeting of the Laborers' Union, will be held m the Oddfellows' Hall, Grey street, at 7.30 to-night.
