HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the High School Board of Governors ,\vas held at th© officei of the Board yesterday afternoon. There were present : Messrs E. H. Mann (chairman), J. Kinder, A. C. Steele, J. W. Nolan, G. Wildish, Foote. (rector), and H. J. Bull (secretary). Owing to the general meeting not boing held, on account of Anzac Day, tho Chairman ]iad nothing to report. The Chairman stated the financial position was satisfactory, and they coukl meet their overdraft and carry on comfortably.

, Inward correspondence was doalt with as follows : —

Robert Aitkm, expressing appreciation, of the Board's congratulations, : — On the motion of Mi* Wildish it was decided to place on the minutes the record success of this scholar.

j The Town Clerk wvote that a deputaj tion consisting of Messrs Mann andi Bright had waited upon the Council m i regard to the Board's request for the j metalling of a portion of Stanley road near the school. — Mr Mann reported that . the Council had replied "N.5.F.," as 1 usual— \iiot sufficient funds. — -On the moj tion of Mi % Wildish, seconded by .Mr

Kinder, at was decided to write to the. Council to the effect that. as the Couircil had not sufficient funds available tometal the road, the holes should at least be filled with/ suitable gravel to make the . road passable to vehicular traffic. The I Council had had the footpaths cleared, i but the roads were m a very had state.

An amount of departmental business came 'before the Board, and was dealt with.

Mr Foote, rector, submitted his report as follows for the .mouth of April: — The. -'Toll- number is now- 162 boys, 101 girls, -.total 263. The attendance m most cases is very good indeed. The members of the staff have heeu regular and punctual m the discharge* of . their duties. During the month the school took a prominent part m tlw campaign to raise funds for the Y.M.G\A. fund for work at the front. On Anzac Day the school was given a half-holiday to attehd. the memorial service. A large numlber of pupils are taking part m. an, effort to assist tho War Loan, £196 m £1 war loan certificates having been, obtained. The school will be represented by the principal at the secondary! schools' conference, which opens at Christohurch on May 22nd. and which] is followed by tho secondary schools' ', principals' conference. At the rectory and hostel there is nothing of consequence to report. Numbers m attendanco: Boys 61, girls 26. — There was a small list of requirements to be brought before the Board. — The report was adopted.

The Rector reported m vory favorable terms of Miss Whitcombe's success ih fi'.Hng- the temporary vacancy on the staff.

Accounts were paaed for payment, and the Board then rose.
