Sir Charles Bathurst, who has joined the British Ministry of Food as Director of Sugar Distribution, remaining also c hah' man of tho Sugar Commission, states that under the new Public Meals Order no club, inn, hotel, or boarding house may serve sugar except m cooked food to anyone not residing on the premises for the greater part of the week ; and even m these cases Bugar may not be supplied if the person has drawn a sugar ration for the week. People not residing on the premises must take with them any sugar they want with meals or beverages. During the proceedings of a meeting of .Wanganui householdea's on Monday night Mr W. Bruce chairman of the school committeei took strong exception to racing m general, and more particularly to •the fact that at Awapuni the soldiers had been turned out to make room for tRe PaJmeijston orace meeting, and the whole town, went mad uecause a horse was scratched. The sum of £91,000 was put, through the tdtalisaitor, yet the country was calling for money to provide funds for our soldiers. It was enough, 'ho said, to make one ashamed of Tri-s country. The Mayor (Mr 0. B. Maokay) defended the Manawatu Racing Club against tho attack of Mr Bruce, and! ha pointed out that for three years the club bad given their grounds free ag a carasp, with, the stipulation that they could resume it for the races. Proper provision was made to house the mciV at the showgrounds, and lie had "been informed by several men that they .were more comfortable there than at -Awapuiu. A householder said tha* if th,e club had done its duty like the men m the trenches it would not have had the races, and another said if the Government did its duty it would put down racing straight away.
