A BOROUGH APPOINTMENT.

BREEZE IN THE COUNCIL

A slight wave of electricity passed over the Borough Council meeting last wight, when the committee set up to appoint three candidates for the position as sanitary inspector reported that 18 applications had been received for the position and three had been requested to appear before the Council. Cr, Munns : 1 move we go into committee to consider these applications.

Cr. Tucker: I'll second that. Cr. Hill : There is too much of this committee business altogether. If you go into committee I'll go out of the room. Cr. Mouat : We certainly should have it m open meeting. Cr. Miller: If Cr. Hill says he will retire there is no need tv tell us all. Cr. Hill: 1 don't like this sort of business. T believe m doing everything above board.

Cr- Miller: Cr. Hill is the only one who listens to so many outside complaints. This statement led to a retort and reply. Cr. Wauchop : Tliere is no need of any heat m the matter. In fairness to the applicants the matter should be held iv committee

Or. Munns: This open .meeting business is all a fad.

Cr. Ball : Let us get bit with the business. The press is discreet enough not to mention names if the matter is discussed m open meeting. Cr. Munns : I would like the matter put to the meeting anyhow. Cr. Hill went on to refer to Cr. Munns' attitude. The Chairman,-; Order, please ! Cr. Hill: He said I had a fad. Cr. Wauchop : The whole thing should be dealt with m committee.

Cr. Munns: I was referring to Cr. Mouat's remark, not yours. Cr. Oman moved as an amendment that No. 15 application bo accepted. Cr. Munns : I ask for the motion to be put to the meeting. On being put to the meeting the motion to go into committee was carried, and Cr. Hill immediately retired into a side room, and returned to his chair when the Council resumed m open committee.

The chairman. then announced that Mr. J. W. Swain, "plumber, of Gisborne, was the successful applicant.
