STATISTICIAN EXPLAINS.

WHY FATHERS WERE DRAWN IN BALLOT.

■ fPcr Press Association.) WELLINGTON; this day. With reference to the inclusion of a number of Second Diyision reservists with children m yesterday's Gazette, the Government Statistician explains that this was due to the failure of the reservists, m question to notify Mm of the status of their dependents. Many reservists, under the national registration notified the number of their dependents without stating the relationship. The classification of the Second Division being according to the number of children only the Statistician wherever possible notified the reservists m oases m which he was m doubt, and five thousand men,^ m consequence of their replies, were left out of Glass A to later , clashes. Some men, however, did not reply, or had moved Avithout notifying the change of address, though bouhd to do so. Be ing directed by the Military Service Act to place men m whose cases he was m doubt m the earliest class the Statistician accordingly left such men m Class A, and they were drawn m common with others. The fault is their own for not stating the relationship of their dependents clearly. ■ The Statistician also stresses that under the War Regulations Second Divi sion reservists are obliged to notify him within ten days of an increase or decrease by death m their families, m order that they may be placed m thteii proper class. This applies to children only. Those failing to notify the Statistician within the prescribed time are liable to a fine of £100 or 12 months' imprisonment x '"■■ .■ ,
