A VISION OF THE FUTURE.

CTo the Editor ot the Herald.)

Sir,— Now that the. harbor question has^ been settled the two score Gisborne engineers will be cudgelling their* brains for other worlds to conquer. How about attending to the question of electrical power and giving the /electrical engineer the benefit of Gisborne's talent. The Lake Waikaremoana scheme is advocated, but why should we look to cold water for aid? In the pulsing heart oi this island there throbs a power sufficient to reverse the motion of the earth on its |axis if need were. I refer to the thermal energy of the Hot Lakes and Taupo districts. Here steam rises from the bowels of the earth in unlimited quantities _ waiting for the brain of man to realise ita possibilities. Do away with the coalminer and his ever-present strikes — let him get out into the sunshine and he will be less discontented. Free the collier ships for other sea . trade ban carrying black diamonds. Give the stoker on your boilers in factories and gasworks work 'more congenial than shovelling coal and wheeling out smoke. Listen to the promise*? of the goddeas "Electra" :—

I'll turn the screw that churns the

mighty deep;. I'll thrust along the stealthy submarine. And aeroplanes aloft in safety keep, And even stop to separate the struggling coefcy's cream. I'll speed the motor car throughout the land, The earth I'll plough and) lit for crops prepare, h I'll shear the sheep ; the bale I'll dump and brand And undertake to decimate the worried

housewife's care."

Where Nature pours forth her energy at Rotorue, at Taupb, and at Tokaanu I can imagine vast generating stations with transmission lines branching to all points of the compass. Still later wireless transmission of this electrical energy will be possible. This land will then become what coal has made England, and when the prophesied 1 Armageddon of the Pacific arrives we shall bo as strong In our place* in that struggle ns leaders of civilisation as England has proved herself in th© one now in progress. Allow me to conclude by prophesying that th© Fish of Maui will yet become the power-house of the Pacific. — Yours' etc.,

THAPY THE GANDER.
