The Wairarapa Automobile Association has decided to obtain an authoritative decision by the Supremo Court as to the legalil-v of the by-laws which fix the speed limit of motor-ears at. from ten tv twelve miles an hour.

An unusual mishap occurred at Makaraka this afternoon, about 2.30 o'clock. Sir W. Harris was motoring out from town, when a back, tyre suddenly came off. This had the effect of throwing the car right round on tho roadway, with the result that it crashed into a buggy driven by Mrs Brooking, of Matawhero.. who was accompanied by another lady and a child. The occupants of the buggy were all thrown out, but apart from the shock they were uninjured. The buggy, however, was smashed, and the horse sustained a broken leg and had subsequently to be destroyed.

Tho Auckland Herald's Huntly correspondent gives tho following report of the shooting affair : A sensational incident occurred at Huntly South on Friday afternoon, a man named David Kernonan being "shot through the right shoulder with a single-barrelled' shotgun. A man, whose name is reported to be Hayes, was subsequently arrested by the police on a charge of attempted murder. Kernohan is a widower, with two children, and Hayes is married. It is alleged that "Kernohan was shot near Hayes' residence. Kernohan's wound, which was received at close range, is severe, the man being sent to tlio Hamilton hospital.

hx the Magistrate's Court tliis afternoon, Before Messrs It. Johnson and H. E. Hill, J.'s.P., P. E. Ramsay was charged with common assault on James McKay, on the 'latter's information. The informant, said he had only been ten days m the accused's employ as a baker's driver, and on coming to work on the Thursday morning ho found his van missing, and was told by the accused to go home. Witness demanded his wages, but the accused said he would have to wait till Saturday. Witness demanded them immediately, and after a while accused came out and put his hand on hia (witness') shoulder to put him off, when tlie dog bit him (witness) m the leg. Just then another driver ran out, and said, "That's enough boss; leave him go." Mr 'Burnard said the case for the defence was totally different. When plaintiff first started he was .very "slow, and claimed payment for. overtime. An accident occured on November 1 through his not chaining the wheel of the cart, and complaints were also received from customers to the effect that unless accused .sent a .more ...obliging man found he would lose their custom. The informant was dismissed, and he came to the premises next morning and demanded payment immediately^ although accused told him he could not ! get it till the end of the week. He continued to remain on the premises, and accused went out to see him off the premises, and when he (accused) put. his hand on him, a dog. which did not belong to accused, bit the informant m tho leg. During the time of employment' this driver- had proved niost disobliging, and accused's purpose m delayinsc payment was to check 'some discrepancies ur his books. Accused and two other drivers gave evidence m support of Mr Burnard's contention, after which the bench gave judgment for accused and dismissed the information, as it held the case had not been proved ; the injury inflicted was caused by a dOg which did not belong to the accused. No costs were allowed.
