(Per Press Association. ) WAIROA, Urn day. Mr Henry Hyde Can-, one of Wairoa'sj oldest military settlers, died suddenly j of heart failure.- oiv' Saturday' evening, in his 73rd year. A native of Liverpool lie came to iNew Zealand in 1860 with lii.s parents. His father was :it one ; time editor of the Hiiwke's I3;iy Herald. Deceased served on the West Coast under Colonel McDonnell. He joined the Hawke's Bay military settlers in 1866, talcing up a land grant at Maruma.ru, but was driven oft" by Hauhau troubles. He joined the A.C. force and. remained in it until its disbandment about 1878. -Subsequently he entered the civil force and was stationed with the- police at Otaki and Waipawa. He married-. -Miss Mary Carroll (now deceased), sister of Sir James, and leaves no issue, but an adopted son, Harold (son of Mr Herbert .Williams), nephew of Sir James Can-oil. The deceased's sister married Major Gascoigne at Hastings. The funeral will take place tormorrow.
