CHEAPER BREAD.

Lord Bhondda, the new Food Controller, authorised the following statement regarding the future policy of the Food Ministry :

"I have been given very ample authority by tho Government to deal with the whole situation. I am empowered, should I find 1 it necessary, to take over the food supplies of the country, and to adopt strong measures to check all speculation in the necessaries of life. The man who. seeks to profit by the necessities of his country at this ,hour of her peril, and when thousands are cheerfully making 1 the supreme, sacrifice in tho cause of liberty, is nothing short of a blackmailer, and must be treated ns such. My first effort will bo directed towards securing a reduction in thtei price of bread. This I consider to be tho urgent need of the moment. I Intend to be as fair as the conditions of war will permit, but, .frankly, tny sympathies are with th© consumer. I want the help of local authority in the matter of dis-
