Mr John Barnett, aged 73 years, a wellknown farmer, at iSeestoir Canterbury,; liad walked to service. Soon after he took his seat he suddenly expired. .He had suffered from heart trouble, but had recently been in good health. He was visiting this district with hi^ wife aud son, Dr. Barnett, Palmerston, who lias been on active service. WANGANUT, this day.

It is reported: that Mi' Olias. A. Barton, formerly clerk of the court, was drowned yesterday while fording a rivet to reach his farm, The report lias. not been confirmed. . ' ■

DUNEDIN, this day. Obituary : Captain Robert Strarig, for many years marine superintendent of the Unon Steam Ship Co.

BLUFF, this day. A strange vessel stranded 1 on the William Davio Bank, outside Bluff harbor soon after eight on Saturday night. A harbor tug Cook a pilot aboard the stranger, and as the. tide made the vessel floated off abou6 ten o'clock! A little sea was running, and kept the big ship movingr preventing her settling in the sand. The sand having clogged the condensers the ship had to anchor in the channel till they were cleaned, and then entered port, berthing at three o'clock on Sunday morning. The captain states the vessel is not leaking.
