THE DEAD AT POZIERES.
MONUMENT UNVEILED. [ LONDON, July 10. General Sir William Birdwood' unveiled a monument on. Pozieres -Ridge on Sunday to the memory of the fallen offi|Cei*s^ and men of the First Division. Tt is a simple white cross bearing aii emblematic design.* ' The ceremony was impressiv. and [•touching. The ridge is a deep green [again, but "ts surface is broken into a [jumble of billows, like the North Sea jin a gale. There are few . traces -of the terrible prolonged struggle wherein the Australians won imperishable fame. The hymns "For Ever Witli the Lord" and "Abide With Me" wer c sung, and after prayers, Scripture reading, and an .address the monument!' was unveiled. THe troops stood statue-like to the General's salute, whilst tlie bugles rang "The Last Post." In keeping with the solemnity of the ceremony was the sombre grey morning, after a week's brilliant' sunshine, as though nature understood, and wanted to show her sympathy. Nor' was the occasion less moving when one realised that .the. men had come from the farthest* ends of the world to fight m the creat cause. "■ -
