THE POULTRY SHOW.

The Poultry Show Avas formally open ed this afternoon 'by his Worship thMayOr w,ho congratulated the club upoi the splendid exhibition iand wished then every success. "There is no doubt there is an im- 1 provement m the utility classes," re- 1 marked Mr F. Brown, Government ex- 1 pert,' who judged this section. This was j especially so m the heavy breeds. In tho light breeds he expected to see a better line of males. Generally speaking there was nothing of exceptional quality. Amongst the females there were some very good specimens. Regarding the falling off m the males m the light breeds, Mr Brown said this applied to all over the country. One i thing breeders must mind was. tbat \ whilst holding on tp the pullet line m Ijan endeavor to secure the maximum j! number of eggs, the male lines, m White Leghorns especially were going back. The sooner they realised that m mating tho essential was to secure a gooijl percentage of both . males and females the hotter it would be for the breeding, because it only stood* to reason that with the male line of White Leghorns weakening, it must have, a serious .fleet m the very near future. I Mr j. Nixon, judge of the , open classes at the Poultry Show, said that since he was here last year the birds had much improved, especially m the Old English game, which were about tbe best he bad ever seen. He might say the same about the white Plymouth' Rooks. He had found' great difficulty m separating these birds, which could be shown anywhere 'in -New Zealand; even • those that did not get a would have beaten birds he had seen m other I shows. Tlie Silver Wyandotte females | were a very good class, also the Americans which were fit to show anywhere, particularly the pullets." The white jWyandottes were exceedingly good. Talcling the show on the whole, it was 'much better than last year's. An unfortunate feature about the ducks wa* that they were m too small pens to. be seen properly v
