STRIKING THE RATE.
The necessary procedure for striking the annual rate was adopted at to-day's meeting of the Cook County Council, when the , following rates were formally ordered to be struck m the respective ridings:—Patutahi, 1-Jd (same as last year); Waimata, l.d (increase id); Muriwai, 13d (increase id); Waingake, ljd (1 9-l4d last year); Gisborne, ljd (increase id); Pouawa, 1 l-Gd (increase l-6d); Whataupoko, lid (same as last year); Tolaga Bay, l.d (increase id); Hangaroa, lid (same as last year); Pakarae, Id (same as last year). In the course of the discussion, Cr. Tombleson said he desired to strike lid for Waimata riding.— Cr. Jex 'Blake, however, took exception, pointing out that this would not be sufficient to wipe out the present overdraft (£1636). but that it would be further m debt next year.— Ci: Reynolds declared that this was a good time to strike a good rate, and if their money did not go m rates it went m taxes.— Cr. Holden submitted that as he and others were rai_ing\ their rates Waimata should do likewise. — Cr. . Tombleson said he"-.. would leave it to the Council. — The Chairman suggested I'd.— Cr. Tombleson said •he did not agree, but supposed it would have to be lid.— A councillor*: An election is coming on this year. (Laughter.)— Subsequently Cr. Reynolds suggested lid for Tolaga Bay.— The clerk pointed out. that after paying for special loans there would be only 2-3 d for works.— Cr. Tombleson reminded Cr. Rcy.nolds that it was a good timeVto strike Yates. (Laughter.)— Cr. Reynolds said he was agreeable to an increase, but Cr. Boland (who was absent) desired the old rate. Eventually Tolaga rate was fixed at ljd. .
