WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waiapu County Council was held on the 23td April m the Council -Chamber, there being present: Grs. A. B. -Williams, R. VV. Kemp, J. H. McNeil, C. 1. B Beckett, and Wm Oates

Cr. Kemp proposed, seconded by Cr. Beckett and canried, that Cr A. B. Williams take tlie chair. Incoming correspondence was dealt ' with as f ohows :

From Mr Geo. Kirk,- -.asking on belialf of Mr Banks if there is a road through Mr Metcalfe's property from the Opurawehea stream to the Maraehara. — Mr Kirk to be informed that there is no road.

From Mr H. McQutohie, m reference to necessary repairs, to the road up the Hicks Bay river, and asking whether the Council is prepared to help him m ithe expense of such repairs. — Or. Kemp proposed, and was seconded by Cr. Beckett, that the engineer or overseer inspect and make an estimate of the cost and interview* Mr McClutchie ahd aa-range with him to do ithe work. — Carried.

From the secretary of the Society of Civil Engineers in* reference; to the appointment of local authorities' engineers, and stating that without wishing to intrude they would be pleased to advise d/oout applicants at any time. — Received; Or. Oiates proposed, and Or. McNeil seconded, that the resolution passed at a previous meeting m regard to the removal of telegraph .wires, etc., from the Waiapu bridge should refer to all bridge^ within the County.— Caried.

From the Waiapu " Hospital Board, making an application for a contribu r tion of £400 for present requirements of the hospital. — Cr. Beckett proposed, and it was seconded by- Cr. Kemp, that the contribution be granted. — Carried. From the Public Trustee, stating that his offer of a loan of £2500 for forming and metalling the Pt. Awanui Tikitiki road will remain open for a further 14 days. — Or. McNeil proposed, and Cr, Beckett seconded, that tho offer bo accepted. — Carried.

The engineer's report was read and' considered. Arising out- of the report the engineer was instructed to have the temporary bridge over the wash-out on the Maungahauini road stayed up. The chairman proposed, and it was seconded by Or Beckett, .that an estimate of a bridge over the Orutua stream be forwarded .to the persons interested;-— — Carried.

Or Beckett proposed, and it was seconded by Or. McNeil, that the engineer inspect and see what can be done by erecting a groyne well up above the stock paddock m the Awatere with a view ,of keeping the river m its proper course. — Carried. .;

The overseer's report was read and considered. The chairman proposed, and Cr. Oates seconded, that the overseer be authorised to make to have the stable m the Council yard, taken up to Te Puia to be used as a store for horse feed.— 'Carried.

It was decided to put Mr Vale's party on to -work at the Te Araroa end of the county on its arrival.

Cr. McNeil proposedi and it was seconded by Cr. Beckett, that the work of repairing the Rarigitukia-Poroporo road be done and the overseer be authorised to make arrangements, with the natives to do the work. — Carried.

The engineer was instructed .to have the Kaiirianga road foiined and metalled and willows planted when the opportunity serves. P Cr. McNeil proposed, -and it was .seconded by Cr Beckett, that a notice board be erected a* either end of the Waiapu bridge, cautioning , the public against travelling at an excessive rate, and that the police bo asked to assist to enforce it.— Carried.

Cr. Gates proposed, and it was seconded by Cr Beckett, and Carried, that the acting-Premier: be telegraphed to m regard to tho present labor trouble, dating .that this Council desire to assure, tho Government of their entire sympathy m the present crisis.. ' Aci^unts. totalling the sum of £3296 14s 8d were passed for payment.
