The Indian National Congress is , noted for the length of its speeches. ■ One of Mr. Lloyd George's recent speeches, practically addressed to the »vhole world; ran. to only 6000 words, but the address of the president of the Congress at its last meeting used 30,240 words. Some of the leading Indian news- j papers absolutely declined to tackle it.

A reoent mail from- the front states that a Japanese trench mortar which the Wellington Infantry Battalion Regiment used at Gallipoli and with which they put fear into the heart- of Jacko lurk has been shipped) to. Welington. It was brought off on 'the last night of the evacuation and on the third last night fired away a tremendous lot of ammunition just as. a parting shot. They are not used in France, where the army has much better devices.

Some misunderstanding has arisen, it appears, in regard to the reference made in our New Fork cable message yesterday to Lloyds' Underwriters (says the Melbourne- Argus). The organisation has evidently been asked to quote a rat© of insurance to cover a total loss if the war were to end in three months' tome, and the reply has been given that a premium of 10 per cent, would be required. Tho enquiry no doubt came from someone with war contracts which would terminate at the Conclusion of peace, and who wished to protect himself agaanst probable loss in connection therewith. That Lloyds asked only 10 per cent, for the risk indicates that, in their opinion, the chance of peace being declared within three months is very remote. The transaction was merely an ordinary question of insurance.
