CHESS CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING

The splendid attendance at the annual meeting of the Oisborne Chess Olub on Saturday evening augurs well for* a successful season. The President (Mr., ft: W. Witty) occupied the chair, and there was an attendance of 16 other members. The- treasurer's balance-sheet and-state-ment of accounts and the president's annual report, which was m the following terms, were adopted:— "From various causes our last annual meeting was not held till August, 1916, instead of as usual m April, -when wo started the season with a dcbiV balance of £1 13s Gd. The present . season closes with a credit balance o^« £6 17s lid, against which we have liabilities amount ing to £3 10s 6d. Thl&i-stttisfacfory iinancial position (which: is the best record for some years, past! may be accounted for by a substantial* increase. in membership, together .with a substantial diminution' of expenditure. In the course of the present • season ,~vve liave had only one match with outside clubs, viz., Napier, which was played by telegraph on two successive Saturday nights, eight boards a-side. We won 5J games to •},*. 2 gam£s were sent for adjudication, one of "which will probably be awarded to Napier and the other to Gisborne. Areturn match might probably bo arranged if the wires can be secured, b'jutr for the present war news and casualty lists- of. course,, take- precedence. I regret to have to record, that Mr. King has sent m his resignation as a member. As Mr. King acted as secretary for the club from l!)il to 1916, I think the secretary should be authorised to write him a letter thanking him for past services, and requesting him to reconsider the question of leaving a club frith which he had been so long associated. Club senior tournament: This was started with eight entries, each entrant playing the other one -game-, and. a sealed handicap was made by myself? the result being that the same has been won by Mr. J. H. dull: Mr. Malcolm won. the largest: number of games, but Mis handicap put him out of it. In my opinion the time is opportune for starting . a draughts club m conjunction with our present club, as we have a credit balance amply sufficient to. provide the necessary extra tables and .boards, j but this * I leave m the hands of the members. I believe the result would be .that a . great many of the present draughts players would soon become chess players." Arising : but' df the Chairman's: report, it was dfccidtd'to-c'all'a meeting of chess and draughts players fori"Friday< evening., next' to go * into the matter of .including, draughts m the* iv notions of the club, f The- election, of officers, resulted as follows:— President. Mr. J. W. Witty (reelected); vice-presidents,. Messrs J. H. Bull (re-elected), F. <5. Malcolm, and J. H. Cato; secretary and treasurer, Mr. G. D. Malcolm; auditor; Mr. F. Ji Rowley (reelected). On Mr. G. D. Malcolm's suggestion, if was decided . not to elect a formal committee, but to leave matters mi the hands of the executive officers,, and of .members of the club, who may be present at meetings, five .to- form ar luorum. It was decided to obtain new sets of chessmen, and Mr. J. H. Bull kindly offered to donate one set and to place his troohy money from the championship tourney at the disposal of the club to obtain a further* set. •■.-,. Mr Witty also offered to provide any sets bf draughts which might be necessary if it were decided to include draughts m the club's, functions. A hearty, vote of < thanks was accorded Messrs Bull, and i Witty for their^generosity. ■:.■.'■-. :'. *' ''■ ■• A ' It was decided to challenge Hamilton toia telegraphic match at any time convenient.
