THE NEW OFFENSIVE.
BATTLE OF THE SCARPE. BRITISH FORGING AHEAD. TERRDJIC FIGHTING CONTINUES. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.! (Reuter's Telegram.) LONDON, April 28. Sir Douglas Haig reports : We attacked yesterday morning on a front of several miles northward of the river Scarpe, meeting considerable opposition, but making good progress. LONDON, April 29. Sir Douglas Haig reports severe fighting m whioh we had the advantage all day long from the Scarpe river to the Acheville-Vimy road. We captured Arlux-en-Gonelle and the enemy's positions on over two miles of front north ajid souith of the village. We also made progress north-east of Gavrelle and on the western slopes of Gavrelle and Roeux. Southward of the river Aye gained ground north of Monchy4e-Preux. The enemy, m many violent 'counterattacks with considerable forces, suffered heavily from our artillery and machine gun fire. Heavy fighting m the neighborhood of Roeux and Oppy continues. We have taken several hundred prisoners. ( and N.Z. Cable Association.) PARIS. April 29. Correspondents indicate that the British are engaged m terrific lighting and have already secured portion of the village of Oppy, Avhere the Germans offered a most determined resistance, 'throwing m new divisions. Many German prisoners arc arriving from the battle-front north of Gavr?l!e" this being indicative of British successes there.
