The beautiful cathedral of Laon ranks as one of the rabst important existing creations of the architectural art of the twelfth and thinteenth centuries. The original cathedral -was destroyed by fire ?n the communal disturbances of Laon m the early part of the twelfth century. The building is cruciform, and the choir, instead if having .the usual arched or domed roof, terminates m a straight wall. Each of the three facades formerly had two towers with spires, while there was also a great central tower: Of these towers, only four remain, and being now without spires, they give the building the appearance of a strong castle. The west front ranks next to that of Notre Dame at Paris m purity of design, while the chapter house and the cloister contain surprisingly beautiful specimens of early thirteenth century architectural wt.
