THE SALVATION ARMY.

i <fc I WORK AMONG BOYS AND GIRLS. 1 ' There is no branch, of Salvation Army I sooial work to which the authorities of ' that organisation are at the present devoting such close attention, or which is being so freely develqp'ed, as the work j ' among tho boys and ' girls. There is ' sound wisdom in this policy; it is a ; happy augury of the Army's recognition ' of a great need, and the emphasis of ' its serious- purpose to serve society. In this Dominion there are no less than ! seven institutes established for this'par- ' ticular work. In these homes accom- ' mqdation is provided for 11,0 less than ' three hundred boys and girls. The most ' recent development of the work among 1 the boys is the establishing of a train- 1 ing farm for boys, where the sons of . fallen soldiers will have ah opportunity | 1 of a thorough training in practical and I 1 scientific farming. The training of boys, ! iiaking them into reliable men and good 1 citizens,, is undoubtedly a< meritorious' work at any tim« ; under present civ- j cumstances it is a special and substan- ! ; tial. service to the State. j 1 A little over seven years ago the' 1 Army opened its first Boys' Home in ! ; this Dominion. This home is situated in ' Eltharn, Taranaki, "aari'd with the ten j j acres of ground on which it stands was made a free gift to ' tho Army by Mr. I I T. H. Jenkins, of that town. The in- 1 stitutio'n has accommodation for fifty ; boys, whose 'ages rarfge from six to six- j teen. They are not boys of the incor- j rigible or reformatory type, but are in j tjle majority of cases orphans, or semi- j orphans. With the object of bringing j '■ this work more prominently before the ' public, it has been arranged that a party j of boys from this particular institution ■ are shortly to visifc this town. There ; will be thirty boys 'in the party,, and: they will be in charge of the manager, and matron of the home, Adjuant and : Mrs. Scotney. The party liave been at- i tending the Congress recently held in . Auckland, and are now en route f or ( , their home in Eltham. The boys are advertised to give' an entertaining pro- j • gramme during their visit, and, as" they, > are recognised as vea-y able exponents I of Swedish drill, and exceedingly popu- | l lar entertainers, their visit will be of 1 especial interest to those interested in this very ' important* branch of the Sal- . vation Army's social operations. On Thursday evening there will be a recep--1 tion in the Citadel by His Worship the > Mayor and Councillors. Other fixtures , are : Sunday evening next, Opera House , at 8.15; Monday evening, Opera House,
