THE COAST ROADS.
. NECESSITY FOR INLAND ROAD BEING OPENED. Mr AF. «1. Keane. Cook County _ overseer, who has retuitied-frpm -i visit tt 1 theCoffSt, state-, that the roids to Tolaga jßft'ai. jtritt: s abpUt J as';ba-l'.a_i' they could be." The. road'X&l'ttii'gb Waimata was all /ight for vehicular. "traffic as far a? Todd's, but through Arakihi there wert some bad slips:--* --Given fine weather, however, the obstrudtions should be re moved within A month, when vehicle* '.would be able to reach Tolaga Bay by that route. The road on the Ooast was aa bad that it is probable .the .overseer will advis. the.Cou-)ty Coptlcil .to devote their efforts to ._tpenin*g' up' the long-talked-of inland Coast, road, instead of expending money on the old load, which may slip away again. The road was completely blocked betwe'en.. Rotatahi and Pakai-ae, a great many big slips having come down, whilst the" whole .rond at Puatae aapeared to have slipped into the sea.^ In contrast to flie^e conditions, Mr Keane remarked!- that on the line of the proposed inland road there were no slips at all. Mr Reane is endeavoring to open up the Coast- road as far as. possible. H»* hopes m two or three weeks' to have the Tolaga end ofthe deviation opened for vehicles, when^'jferiple would be able to drive down to the Puatae homestead. From there a riding track, only, would be available down to Seymour's, from which place vehicles could'conie on to Gisborne. In the meantime Mr Keane suggests that traveller* should proceed* to Toiaga by the following route, which, of course, is" available for riding only': — Turn off at the Whangara school and. ke^p along that road as far as Hurreys, then^use the new road to the Panikau road, and follow Seymour's road to the Pakarae river; after crossing t the river at the ford follow the telegraph line along the ridge to. the deviation '*_ind- keep on that road to Tolaga Bay. ' As this will be the only route availa_nF*~for. aome-time it' is proposed to erect fingerposts to indicate the turn offs.
