German official : We voluntarily evacuated foremost positions on both banks of the Ancre, and took another defensive line. The enemy remains m ignorance of our movements. . Rearguards compelled the enemy to fight for possession of destroyed country, and retreated before superior attackers. Our weak detacbmentß inflicted sanguinary losses. The British attacks at Letransloy and Sailly failed, witH the exception of two narrow positions captured.
