This morning a Hterald representative secured an interview with Captain, W. L. Gollard, the master of the vessel, and Mr R. G. HaUamope, the local branch manager of the .comp any. Ohu* representative was infornied tjiat the vessel's stem had been buckled, the damage being, fairly considerable, but it was considered not sufficient to prevent the vessel pnttiug to sea.. Water was leaking .into the fore-peak tank, which under ordinary circumstances when iii ligbt condition, was earned fiilL, Above the tank was the fore-peak, which fortunately showed no leak. The damage extended up as high as the 29ft ; hia£k. -<— - _". There was, ; iio water getting into the ship, apart from that which, was getting into the. fore-peak tank, and this had no direct bearing on the seaworthiness of the vessel. An examination, .of the damage was conducted this morning by Captain Gollard, together with Captain Carson, harbormaster, also : Lloyd's local surveyor, Captain Chrisp, and' Mr Hallaxoore. As a Result, of , 'tbe infection the authorities are being communicated with as to what action should be taken. Captain :Golh\rd.. considers* that it is desirable ,tha vsp?el should proceed to Auckland for repairs}, iyrid in.view-of the exposed cpnditwft c 4 the roadstead he is of opinion.. Cbjijit it is expedient that this should bs. done , while the ..weather conditions remain, .fine. It is probable that as a result of instructions . this course will., be adopted this afternoon. The question, of effecting repairs locally ■vvgre considered . this . morning,' and m fact arrangements were put. an band to ,start on, same, but •the captain arrived at the conclusion that it wps more desirable, to consider the question of proceeding to Auckland for repairs. Furthta... enquiries go to show that the daipage to the vessel's stem is of an- extensive .nature. For a depth of about iOft-^startring from the. 29ft draft mark, extending doWn to below the water-line, the .stem has been broken, bent, and. twisted. The bow plates and the adjoining stem have been doubled back to the. port side; The plates are broken at the 29ft mark, and also appear to be damaged below the waterfine. The letter _ Wjould account for the leak into ,jj^joi_e*pea.k'»iank.
