CROSSING THE TIGRIS.
OJ.EAT STROKE OF STRATEGY
(The Time*.)
LONDON. February 23
Mr Candler, describing the great'stroke of strategy iv crossing the Tigris at Shumran while the attention of the Turks was deflected by attacks at Sannaiyat, says: —
"Pontoons were launched at three points. At dawn a British regiment effected the northernmost crossing, surprising the enemy.
The first boat was a few yards from th© north bank before shots were fired. A sharp machine gun fusilade began, but the pickets, after an hour's fight, siuricndered. Two Ghurka regiments crossid down-stream. They were strongly opposed by machine guns, which swept the river. The. Turks attacked with grenades, and the landing became a I tombing match.
Eventually the Ghurkas, established a footing ashore and held on under intense artillery firo, finally linking up with the British, although artillery swept the river bank.
A bridge wa s completed m eight hours. The river was 340 yards wide, and the current ran at five knots. Prisoners admit that the feat was; believed to be imjjossible."
